removing silencer on 2.0 Aircooled

Post by rugchucker »

Hi
I'm having a problem removing the top right bolt that secures the silencer to the heat exchanger. The other 5 nuts are easily accessible but the top offside one is almost totally inaccessible. you can get a ring spanner on it but there is no room to turn.

How have you done it?

Hi, I did this a couple of years ago and if I remember correctly I had to drop 1 heat exchanger also - but then to do this, you had to remove most of that side's tin-wear!!! Reading the Haynes manual confirmed I was doing it correctly - "models vary, and it is complicated and there are too many variants to list detailed instructions for them all". Thanks!!! I also remember that re-fitting was a reversal of removal - silencer and heat exchager(s) raised up as one item.

Hi Thanks for that -------I think :?

I have just ordered a set of s shaped spanners which hopefully I can wiggle in to remove the one awkward nut. If not then I will hacksaw as far as I can the wack it with a hammer & chisel. Oh for a gas axe!!

No way am I going to disturb the heat exchangers unless they are being replaced. They are only 30 years old so years left yet

Hi Bigherb,
I'm hoping the S shaped spanners will do the same thing.

Bet I have to use a bit of force and loads of plusgas. I'm going to give it another go next week when the spanners arrive. :ok :ok

I did it a couple of times when I had an a/c 2L. I cut a ring spanner in half which then fits on the nut and used another suitable sized ring spanner which fits over the end of the cut spanner enabling you to turn the nut. Useful for tightening up after as well!

SUCCESS!!!!!

Manad to get 5 out of 6 nuts undone, guess which wouldnt budge. The top offside one thats the only awkward bu$$er to get at. In the end I hacksawed it off through the gasket. New stainless back box on so hopefully wont need to go through that again.

Thanks for all your advice and the loan of the extra swear words, much needed and well used :ok
