Under-powered leisure battery?

I've got a strange problem - My powersocket - or whatever you call what used to be the lighter - is wired in to the leisure battery on my van. Strangely, it will not provide enough juice to charge or run my satnav or mobile phone. When I use the same cables for both devices in my other car they work fine. Is it possible that I'm not getting enough voltage out of the battery? The interior lights work OK and the fridge functions.

Any suggestions?

have you checked your battery with a multi tester what output are you getting..

The meter shows 9.3 volts off the leisure battery in the camper, and 14.5 volts of the battery in the Subaru - Maybe these devices need 10 volts plus?

9.3v is flat, is that with the engine off? Does it go up when the engine is running? It sounds like it's either had it or isn't getting charged properly by the alternator.

check the output from your alternator.should be around 13.8v iirc.or it could be your split charge system is not doing its job.or your battery is knacked.to see if it is.remove it from the van.charge it for 24 hrs.remove the charger.test the voltage.leave it stood for another 24 hrs.test voltage again.if there is quite a significant difference between the voltages its time to renew...

take your battery to be tested. It can still put out 12v but the amps are the important bit.

It usually needs to be fully charged to be tested. Mine was showing 12v but only giving 100 amps. the battery should've
been giving 360 amps! caused all sorts of probs because whenever i checked it, it was 12v!

if its not holding a charge it will not read 12v all the time

Change the battery if I were you. I don't bother with a "leisure battery" I get A heavy duty starter battery...then not new. My local auto factors keeps a stock of second hand batteries which are fully tested and guaranteed and they cost me £10....scrap yards will have similar..Mark
