Help please - struggling to attach awning to van

Post by binka »

I've bought a Kyham motordome tourer, just put it up for the first time, nice and easy.

I know the figure of 8 attachment won't fit my van so bought the pole and clamp kit. I've been struggling for over an hour to attach it and given up.

I tried first of all clamping one end but then the other end of the pole would fall off and drag the whole pole out of the gutter. So I've tried doing it in the middle first and I think I'm gettign somewhere but then just as I think its clamped in the pole comes out the gutter again.

What do I need to do?

Get some of the big black plastic clips from the pound shop - the ones like they use on market stalls - and use them rather than the little clamps, to hold the pole in the gutter. Works for me anyway, not got a khyam, but I assume the principle is the same.
What a long strange trip it's been

I usually try to keep all the clamps in my pocket,do the middle one first then hold on to the pole move to the nex one either left or right still try holding the pole in place then do the other one nearest the centre clamp. Still holding the pole in place move to the end ones. I am usually able to connect it myself. Don't have the awning pegged down at this point have it close to the van so its not pulling on the pole. You should be underneath :D . Once the pole is on I uaually than pull it out fron the van and peg it down. I often peg down a guy line on the other side of the van say from the middle or the front wheel to the back. it is useful for lining the van up when you have been out for the day. I am only 5ft 3in so its possible

Excellent. I did finally manage it but will look out for some of those big clips as that would be so much easier.

Father-in-law just sold the very same awning, he used a pair of these on his high top.
It doesn't get any easier and quicker.

If you go off and come back again it can be a little difficult lining things up again. You need a second person really.
My daughter marks the position of the wheels with twigs when we go and then uses them to guide me back in.
I would hate to have to try it on my own. I have no spatial awareness at the best of times and certainly cannot work out where the van is in relation to the awning.

re - attaching van to awning after a day trip -

have 2 tent pegs tied together by a piece of yellow string. the tent pags have ribbon on them, the string is the length from one wheel to the other. i put the tent peg in the ground where the front wheel touches the ground, run the string to the back wheel and put the tent peg in the ground where the back wheel touches the ground, this gives me a line to aim at when i drive the van back on to the pitch after a day out. the ribbon stands out in the grass, the line of string makes it easier to see if the van is on the right track.

I stick 3 pegs an inch away from each wheel, with the middle peg inline with the middle of the wheel. I then aim to be within an inch of the pegs and don't worry if I'm too close to them. Need help with alignment on the reversing, but it seems to work quite well.
