Problem starting (intermittent)

Post by stuartrolfe »

I have an intermittent problem with starting (won't turn over but fires straight away when it does turn).
It has been possible for some time to overcome this by fidgeting on the seat in order to rock the body of the van (with a v. high success rate) but this is becoming less successful recently. Any peals of wisdom on this one please? Thanks.

Do you get a click from the starter solinoid when you turn the key? If not it could be the the conection on the starter solinoid on the way out.

Either the heavy leads to the starter solanoid and the very short one from the solanoid to the starter (the solanoid is mounted on top of the starter) need attention, or the stater itself is failing.

New starter with solanoid is not too bad a price from Eurocarparts and is easy to fit.
The only tricky bit is you are supposed to change the little bronze bush in the engine case (that the sharp end of the starter shaft mates into) when changing starters. There is info on here re doing this bit, but post back here if you need more info.

Take the leads off the battery before attempting the above repairs to avoid things blowing up !!
