Loss of Power
1.9 DG just started losing power. Revs up ok in neutral but no guts when going unless its having the nuts reved out of it and thats still no guarentee. Fuel tank is fairly close to empty so my thinking is crap from the bottom of the tank in the filter but just wanted to know if theres anything else obvious to check for?

Re: Loss of Power
So, your telling us ...in gear and your revving it with the clutch out, with not much happening?

Kev,
I gotta a feeling AJP might just mean loss of power under load. Coil, leads, plugs, fuel filter. Change em all first. Otherwise it's fried clutch for breakfast

Re: Loss of Power
Sorry wasn't quite clear enough. She revs up ok in neutral but when trying to drive the engines struggles and comes close to stalling.
Re: Loss of Power
How did she drive before problem started? How old are leads and plugs? Has someone serviced/fettled with her recently? All sounds coil/electrical fault, petrol starvation.
As I said, in this order to save dosh, change fuel filter near tank, dizzy cap, plugs, then leads and finally coil. Unfortunately it is a process of elimination. But least you know all the above is sound once replaced.
I had a similar problem. The leads were working loose from dizzy cap. So I changed everything to pin connector types for better fitting with top results
Good luck

Re: Loss of Power
Leads, plugs, dizzy cap, rotar arm are all less than a year old. Before no problems at all. Does any one know if the fuel line picks up from the front or the back of the tank? As I said origanaly very little fuel in the tank when it started after having just come down a steep hill and improved a bit when I got her going again up a steep hill. So my feeling is still crap from the bottom of the tank in the filter. But it always calms the mind to run it past some wiser minds!

Re: Loss of Power
Thanks Maxstu
As he said, change the fuel filter, There's only one just behind the tank
I would clean the carbs out now.
put some fresh fuel in and tell us if it's still bad
fuel delivery check:
take off the fuel pipe to the carb from the fuel pump.
get a suitable jug
point the pipe into the jug
start the engine
the fuel should squirt out in powerful pulsing jets ....

This is one of the many symptoms I've been suffering from with my 1.9DG. I can't make any comment on the electrics, but the situation has improved on my van following advice re fuel starvation issues from the kind folk on here. One thing that seemed to really make a difference was cleaning out the small cone filter in the carb (Pierburg) where the fuel pipe goes in. Remove the fuel feed pipe then carefully remove the filter from the metal tube on the carb - I got it out using a pin / self-tapper screw combination - then cleaned it out with a good spray of carb cleaner. The top cm of it was properly gunged up.
You could also try taking the carb to bits and clean all the jets and fuel ways out and replace vacuum hoses. Mine certainly runs a bit better now.

Re: Loss of Power
Cheers guys, as suspected filthy filter. Not helped by a lying fuel gauge! Having inspected the tank a little closer (rapping on it with my knuckles) I think that the bottom of the red as opposed to the top end of the red on the gauge would be a more honest answer!
