Exhaust options

Post by mike_gee32 »

I'm now in need of a new exhaust, spent all day removing most of the old one in preparation for swapping the engine into my new caravelle. I found that two of the manifolds were cracked, one at the head and one at the box, no wonder it sounded like a gunfight in a firework factory. I've still to remove the nsf manifold, all the others came off really easily after soaking in plusgas every day for a week, but both the nuts on this one have eroded to the point that there are no flats at all, just a slightly tapered rusty mess about 9mm across. I'm thinking I'll try to grind whats left off with the dremel then see what state the studs are in. I'm trying to do it while the engine is still in as I havent got a stand and I don't want to be mucking about with the engine balancing on a trolley jack, but at least if it does go pear shaped the engine's being dropped anyway.

As none of the old exhaust will be reusable I'm trying to decide what to get, it's an early van and I don't really want to fit the later system if I can help it. The local motor factors want silly money for a Klarius (Timax) system (which is what I've just removed and was only about 4 years old), euro or JK do a cheap(er) bundle but I'm not sure of the quality. I like the idea of a stainless system and have been looking at the VWSpeedshop one, but I've no idea how loud it is. I've seen writeups ranging from nice sporty sound, to boy racer loud, even street race loud.

So reccomendations please, I don't mind sporty sounding but I'm definately not a boy racer and with 2 kids in the back it needs to be bearable on long trips.
