4 speed to 5 speed gearbox swap

Post by The BedShed »

Hi All

New to your lovely site and finding it full of useful stuff.
I've just bought my first T25 and he is in need of a fair bit of work...

He currently has a 1.9 petrol water cooled.
I am going to swap it for a 1.8 16v GTI.

I have got a second T25 which I bought for parts for the GTI conversion. This one is a 1.6 TD 5 speed.

I've just been looking at the gear ratios through this site and am thinking the wider spread of gears on the 5 speed may be quite useful with a fully loaded Camper. However, my question is...

How much of the gear linkage etc do I need to change as the floor seems to be different around the gear stick?
And, more importantly, is it going to be worth all the work?

Thanks so much for your help
Heather

Pretty sure someone else asked this exact same question a few days ago - have a sift through.
