Help...Blown hose!!! SORTED NOW

Hi all,
Just had a water hose blow on me van and shat water onto floor :| (D Reg. 1.9dg) in the engine bay(see pics below).Had alook on the wiki but couldnt find the answer.
So a few questions if anyone can help.

1.Did it poss. blow due to the age of the pipe.(Is this likely?)
2.Is the thermostat likely to be the cause of the problem?
3.Is this pipe buyable or is a secondhand one the more likely option?
4.Just to add saw a bit of steam coming from front of the van,whats caused this?

Just to add,lowered front of van (-45)yesterday(is this likely to have harmed owt.)
Plus got the usual dash lights problem which started last week and to add, the ribbon is all knacked would be an understatement so know way of knowing without temp gauge wots happening on that side of things...

is that the big front to back pipe, plastic with steel inset ? If so they are still availableish, not a fun job, they all go when the steel insert rusts out and cracks the plastic, brickie is doing replacement inserts soon if not already, used pipes available, just look carefully, there will be some cracking ones, some crap, part number is important they vary petrol/diesel 2wd/syncro etc...

Looks like the rubber hose has perished through age. If it was a pressure build up it would have split, that looks like it's literally been blown off, so there was obviously something wrong with the hose itself.

It looks like a standard size hose from many a vehicle so it should be easy to find a new one, which judging by your photo & unless you have some other symptoms other than water loss is all you'll have to do. Apart from refilling & bleeding the cooling system of course.

No Aidan its not that one,its prob. 8"(?) long and S shaped(ish).Can actually see it if you zoom in.

Just zoomed in on picture and to me (not ever had a pipe go before) it looks like its split so not quite sure what to think???

The part No. for the hose is 251121130 A.If this is now obsolete like Ian says has anyone (Aidan?) got one I can buy of them? Pretty please. :D :D :D

Hope thats sum kind of joke Ian...If it aint i've had a quick look and they look ok with my un trained eye.

Just had another look at said pipe and it looks (to me) like a hole/split maybe have been lurking ready to go for a while.Look at top of split where the brown mark seems half way threw,ie not a new split unlike the rest,
what you all think???

I may be wrong but that hose(the famous "S" hose) looks remarkably like the top hose from a Volvo 2litre engine.

Hi,

I've had the same pipe blow. Looks similar with 10cm split along the length. This is the 2nd pipe to go in as many months and RAC man thought it may be a blown head gasket causing too much pressure in the cooling system. Sound reasonable? Had a look at the thermostat and tested OK (opened in boiling water) but there is a tear in the rubber so I'll be replacing that too.

Anyway, upshot is that I need a new "S" pipe. Part number 251121130 A - anyone know where I can get one or got a 2nd hand one?

Too late if you are sorted, but on my late model DG this hose is 251 121 130B. Just bought one from my local VW main dealer - £9 +VAT.
I have found them really helpful for tracking down older parts.
