The sound of a new alternator?

Post by SeanW »

Hello,

I've had a new alternator & belt fitted to my 1989 1.7TD several days ago. When I run the engine is makes a different sound to before, so I was wondering whether it is simply the sound of a new alternator spinning. The sound is like a mild thumping.

I've checked to make sure the coolant pump is turning and it all appears to be running fine.

Should I be worried?

Sometimes you will get a whurring or whistling noise as the new belt and or bushes bed in but never a thumping noise.
The only thing I can think of that would cause this is the belt catching on something 'flapping'.

You need to check the alternator output it could be a faulty rectifier pack in the alternator.

Think I would be worried (Yes) Have you checked that the belt runs inline with all the pulleys, Could be this which is giving the thumping sound. as the belt would be twanging. If you didnt fit it then take it back to who ever did fit it.

Definitely is a 1.7TD (you can see the manual here -http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_25 ... 10839.html.
