Aircooled Running on Two Cylinders!!! Now another Problem!!!

Hi Everyone,

Im having a huge dilema just hooked up the new fuel pump and fuel lines etc for my panels maiden run (had her going with a bit of fuel down the carbs before ) and now to find that the left hand side cylinder head is'nt firing properly!!!

Whats actually happening is that the fuel is not igniting in the bore its getting through and theres a decent spark its just not firing properly well not at all to be straight, i spoke to a friend who said it could be knackered leads and or plugs so checked them and are totally fine (ive had to put two old plugs in as the fuel has sodden the two new ones i'd put in) he also sid that it may be due to the tappets being way to far out and are just not doing anything? or is it something totally different maybe a shagged head or is the carb sending to much ful down the line???

My carbs have been cleaned and rebuilt by myself which is strange because the right hand side is totally fine...

Seriously im in need of some help the mot was booked for tomorrow afternoon with the van being ready for the hatch fest in suffolk this weekend...

Im checking wiki now for some hints but im not sure they'll be anything in there...

would that explain how it feels like its blowing air around the inlet manifold i just assumed it was because of the freezing fuel?

try spraying carb cleaner on the gasket areas

if the engine picks up then that's yer culprit

lol i havent got any carb cleaner left, got a form of wd40 will that work??

dunno ... only ever used carb cleaner.

won't hurt to try it
what you trying to do is block the leak so the mixture is correct

ok tried the dw40 method i can confirm it doesnt work lol, but i did remember that when i tried the fuel down the carb method she ran then i realised that i still had the old left hand side carb fitted and not the one i had rebuilt from my old van. It turns out that the rebuild one just wasnt working properly and when i recleaned up the area where the gasket goes and fitted the old one she pretty much fired straight up...

So one problem solved now for another...

She's running really rich and is popping every now and again, its not to bad but isnt right she also is smoking from the heat exhangers (im assuming its 16 years of "pooh" and dust and now fuel thats burning???) i have another set of heat exchangers and a new muffler is it worth fitting those for the mot to make them smell nicer and to stop the smoke??? (only issue is that they were old sodden from the last engine but i have cleaned them up a bit with the good oll pressure washer)

Also anything in particular the mot testers hit you for other than rust???

I am probably the worst mechanic on here
But i had a similar problem to you yesterday with my 1.9 water cooled and some clever fellow suggested the servo vacuum hose.I taped it up this morning and now my lumpy engine is not so lumpy and definately firing on 4 & not 2 now.
Could yours be the same.
