mv oil leak

Post by shakey »

Got back from a road trip last night and as i parked up there was a massive oil leak. Oil poured out from between the engine and transmission housing. There was no problems with the drive back home with the engine running sweetly, no strange noises and no overheating just the huge oil leak once home. The engine has had no problems before and no previous oil leaks.
ON closer inspection of the van there was a slight oil mist on rear bumper and window so there must have been a leak at some point during the journey home, but no warning lights had showed.
I know there are two oil seals behind the clutch plate, could it be these that have blown, has anyone had this problem? and i know its engine or gearbox out but are these seals a practical fix.
The engine still turns over ok but i need to limp her to garage tomorrow so if anyone has some previous knowledge of these oil blow outs i would be grateful for their advice.
Thank you all.....
p.s. its a '91 vanagon syncro 2.1 mv engine.

checked level in engine, definately down to just above minimum on dip stick(engine always kept at correct level and checked weekly). The oil was definately engine oil too( a bit black and right consistancy). No signs of engine block crack, and she turned over straight away and idled just right this afternoon. I'm guessing its the oil seal flywheel side thats blown but theres been no oil spotting before this weekend, maybe the seal just blew straight away?
