Ignition coil wiring?

Post by sharpmz »

Hi all,

Having some trouble getting to grips with the wiring!

The engine has been starting ok up until now but not shutting off when ignition is switched off. When i got the van there was some dodgy homemade wiring going from the terminal of the ignition coil to a permanant live, this was draing the battery and stopping the ignition from shutting off the engine. Removed said wire and engine wouldn't start. have tried a couple of things with no joy so put the wire back and now won't start at all????

I'd like to make sure that the coil is correctly wired, everything seems to be ok but there is a green wire missing from the top of the coil that i can see in the haynes but not sure where it goes or what it is?? Any one help???

I've attached the haynes piccy the wire missin is the left hand green going to E12, the green to the TCI unit seeems to be fine.

When you turn on ignition without the bodged wire connected, do you get ignition lights and oil lights come on? If not I would suspect the ignition switch as these lights and the ignition feed to the coil share the same supply.
Whack everything back as it should be and check for the above.
Can't help with the other green cable though, dunno where that goes but if everything goes back as it was when the 'extra' supply cable was on there, it should work fine... Providing you can get ignition lights!
Strange how they didn't come on when the permanent live to the coil was attached though... :?

In that case you have a break somewhere in the supply wire to the coil.
Silly question but does your horn work? Just asking because it runs from the same supply from the ignition switch.
As I remember, the cable splits behind the fuse box on the fuse for the horn and continues on to the coil. If all else fails, for the moment a cable could be run from the horn fuse (power in side, usualy at the bottom of the fuse) to the coil, just to get you going.
It is possible, while you were playing with connections etc. that you could have disconnected the power supply to the ignition module. This is fed from the coil terminal where the extra live would have come from. Make sure it's not been connected to the other terminal accidently!
PS. Remember... Live is coloured Black on these vehicles... For ignition anyway!

Still haven't been able to get the engine running and so replaced the bodged wire as it had been just to get it started but now it won't start like that either??

Feel like i'm missing something obvious but haven't a clue!!???
Any one got any suggestions??
