Possible dying fuel pump?

Hey everyone,

I've got an 84 watercooled/petro T25 that's given me no trouble for the 10 or so months that I've owned it. But ever since going on a long road trip in blisterting heat, every time the engine heats up enough it starts cutting out. As in, I'll be driving and the engine just acts as if I let off the accelerator pedal for a bit. I'll just keep my foot down and it'll cut in and out and in and out. Doesn't sound like the engine is going to stall though, it's just as if I was coasting for a few seconds at a time on purpose. Do you think it could be the fuel pump/filter? It's been making strange noises lately. That's the only thing I can think of at *all*, but I'm still a young T25 owner =]

Any help would be appreciated, searching yeilded nothing.

Is it a fuel injected 1.9 "DH" ??? Electric fuel pump... if its supplying enough fuel on full throttle its not likely its a pump problem...

I would do a full service and set up, replace the dizzy cap and rotor arm too (leads as well if they havent been changed in a long time).. unplug and plug in any of the connectors for the ecu and sensors injectors a few times to "clean up" any dodgy contacts... check earth straps and point are nice and clean of corrosion...

Also the insulation on the loom that comes back from the dizzy to the ignition module could be breaking down and causing problems..

Then its a case of following the Bentley manual for the diagnosis... It has an really good procedure to follow in there...

Yeah, it's fuel injected. Cool, I'll take a look see and see what I can find. Thanks for the pointers so far.

The fuel pump got a lot louder a few months ago, and seems to wine a bit. When I turn the key before ignition to activate the fuel injection, the initial sound it makes seems to get worse and worse. It sort of sounds like a dying kitten for lack of a better term. Graphic, I know.

E D I T: Alright, the dizzy cap and rotor arms are all in primo shape, all the connectors seem fine and the insulation seems fine on the loom. So that can't be it. I unplugged and replugged in a bunch of stuff, maybe that'll help. The engine seems pretty dirty, maybe that's part of the problem.

Also, as for following the Bentley book, it's aweful expensive (Don't have one yet). The Haynes is less than half the price, do you think I'd be ok just getting that?

Bentley good but a bit over the top in a way. Make sure you get the elves addition though. We had a member on here who inadvertently uncrewed the mystery blanking plate near the engine bay (he hadn't read the elves section) and he had a hell of a job to get them all back in again - they leap about everywhere and play with your electrics and dash switches. Then you get the cut 'n shut boys who put the wrong elves in the wrong van - bad move. They are not easily fooled and will simply picket the driving seat rendering the vehicle inoperable. Kev being a Wolverhampton lad will have heard of the terrible take of a Dudley man who stood his ground after opening that hatch, armed only with a 13mm open end. His screams could be heard as far as Telford and he still limps even now.
