Tinware? Pics please

Post by alkers »

Hi all, Ihave tried to do a search first.

Basically I have a 1982 Aircooled, and think after reading another thread that I am missing Tinware. Can someone please send me a pic of an engine with the tinware in place? I assume you can see it from just lifting the lid on the engine? All I can find on here is a sketch on a WIKI page, but is of the engine taken apart so I find it had to visualise.

Also please can you tell me what it is for! Peoples comments seem to suggest it is very important.

Many Thanks!

Im in the same boat and would like to see all the tinware laid out on the floor. By the way you cant see all the tinware from peering in to the engine bay there are some parts underneath. They go from the heat exchangers to the heads

You have an "air cooled" engine... therfore you need cool air to pass over the hot engine to actually cool it.. if the tinware and seal is missing, all that happens is hot air is recirculated and your engine is not cooled effectivly, this heats the engine more and the oil too causing more heat to be recirculated........ and so the cycle continues... eventually your oil will be so thin it wont lubricate, the engine components will be so hot that things start to "weld" together........ = dead engine........ = open wallet surgery, time and inconvenience..

VW didnt design and fit the tinware for looks.. it serves a vital purpose...

Thanks for that excellent explanation toomanytoys! My cab gets really hot when driving and my fans work constantly even when off so can't get away from it.

To me this suggests that the hot air is getting moved away from the engine - cooling it. However could this also mean there be "too much hot air", caused because the cooler air isnt' being kept in place by the tinware?!?!

My oil light only comes on when starting up, and it has never come on when driving - never driven for more than 2.5hrs though. I guess this would be my sign for overheating. My oil level also never seems to deteriorate. Is there any way to tell if oil is thinning?

Also how do you get hold of tinware? scrappage?

Hi Albert. If this link works, it should lead you to the photos of tinware laid out I had seen earlier. Don't mean much to me. Nor had the sketch I had found on WIKI, but thanks for posting the link anyway Kev.

Damien, those pics are great though. I think I can safely say I am missing a few bits!! Just need to count how many! But def the big bit that goes along the back - prob most important!!

Sorry to jump in on the post but has anyone got pictures of tinware on a 1.9 water cooled engine? Just so I can make sure mine is all there.

On the subject of tinware - where the hell can you buy it from?!

I know the odd bit comes up for sale on here etc but can you buy it new or a reproduction? Anyone know of any for sale.

Cheers
