Spark plugs code for 2.1 petrol

Post by chano »

I'm trying to buy new spark plugs here on Gran Canaria using the code in the Haynes manual (WR 7 LT+ ). I'm not having a lot of success. Is there another reference number i can use? Engine is 2.1 petrol injection - engine code DJ (1990).

Thanks

Alan

Morning Alan,

The VW parts system also lists an NGK plug for a DJ. Their number is BUR6ET (VW number is 101000036AA).

I hope that helps

There are just loads of alternatives...I mean loads:
Stanard single electrode plugs
Double electrode
Triple electrode
Quad electrode
Copper
Platinum
etc etc etc
Loads and loads of viable alternatives it just depends on what you want out of them.
To be honest most users don't do particularly high mileage and over service as a result, so your standard single electrode types (change every 12,000 miles) are perfectly adequate and as VW recommend a 0.7mm gap the single electrodes are the only ones that can be adjusted to VW spec (others, triples/quads are preset and non adjustable and come with mush larger gaps to suite the high powered ignition systems found on newer vehicles, where plug gaps of over 1mm are the normal)
NGK: B6ES (as recommended in the NGK book for the MV or DJ 2.1) or if you want radio supression BR6ES (just less likely to interfere with televisions/radio's)
Bosch: W7CCO (also as recommended) or W7C, W7CC, W7CP, WR7C, WR7CP, WR7D, WR7DC, WR7DP
VW also built supression into their plug leads and caps so don't necessarily need resistor plugs.
But as I said there are LOADS of alternatives as long as the heat range and reach are correct they will run fine (but remember what I said about plug gaps)

Thanks for the information, Martin.

Regarding plug gap: My old Haynes manual states 0.7 mm gap for 2.1 engines with MV and SS codes. 1.0 mm for engine code DJ (mine). You say VW state 1.0 mm for ignition systems on newer vehicles. 0.7 mm or 1.0 mm gap for my engine?

Thanks

Hi Alan
I was generalizing, as in, vehicles ignition systems in general have become more powerful and service intervals have increased, hence the reason why newer engines use spark plugs with multi electrodes made of fancy materials to cope with the extended sevice intervals (basically to make them capable of lasting longer with less or even no maintenance) and these generally have much larger spark plug gaps (anything from 0.9 to 1.2mm)
In my link, the 2.1 Dj definately states a spark plug gap of 0.7mm (information posted by a very reliable source)
see:
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... DJdata.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

like I say, many owners are using these three/four electrode plugs without issues...I'm just saying in my opinion they are not ideal

With the DJ (more powerful / higher compression / 98 octane) the plugs may just wear out quicker.
