Engine won't turn off??

Post by sharpmz »

Hi All,

My 1.9 watercooled '85 won't shut off?

I'm hoping this will be a simple fix but not so sure?? Ignition starts engine no probs but when i turn the key back she just keeps on running. I was hoping it would be straight forward and that the key turn wasn't breaking the circuit so tried to re-create and just pulled the adapter from the ignition but no joy.

Is there another stage in the process from key turn to engine (solenoid??) shut off or is it something completely different!!??

Hope i've explained this OK,

Matt.

on any system their should be a earth wire from the switch to the body
that how it kills the power
remember the old lawn mowers the only way to stop them was short out the spark plug to the engine block
so its the same with cars/vans so check the connections first if its a petrol engine
god did not let us invent metal to only make paper clips v6 camper not in his plan that was my idea.

Happened on my '88 Nissan Bluebird many years ago. AA man was called out - it was the alternator... Not a fault I would have associated as the alternator, but swapped it out I did and low and behold...

Pull the plug out from under the ignition switch - if it stops it its probably the switch if it desnt then it might the alternator

An alternator can be repaired.

FIrst off though... If you just turn your ignition on and then off without starting the engine, do the ignition lights stay on?
Have you always had this problem or is it something that has started recently (and not switched off, by the sound of things!).

Check the red cable from the alternator is running to the starter motor terminal. It's possible someone has rewired this cable to your ignition circuit and although this will work, the alternator will constantly supply power to the ignition circuit even when the ignition switch is off. It wouldn't be good to have it wired this way either due to large currents being sent through small cables from alternator to battery.

Will have to check the lights tomorrow as not near the van!

The van is new to me and had a re con engine fitted a year or so ago, the seller made it sound like it was a new problem but by new he could have meant a year!!

Will check the cable is going to the starter motor, he put the engine in himself so could well be an option.

Thanks for advice :D
