I'd go for a branded one, eg. Waeco, Silverline. Make sure it's rated generously for the load you are planning. Should be safe so long as it doesn't get dunked in water.
Syncrosport (taking a break as of summer 2024)
Volkswagen Transporter, reloaded.

Use dc to dc converters as they are far more efficient for anything like a laptop, tv, etc.
Don't buy a 1000w one if all you need is 150w. Waste of power again - think of the drain on your battery. Don't forget that the efficiency of an inverter is in the region of 75/80% so you 'lose' 20/25 watts from a 1000w inverter as heat.
So it hinges on what you want to run from it.Hence:

20/25% of 1000 watts is 200/250 watts...like you say, wasted in the process.

laptop - run from dc/ dc converter
phone - likewise or usb charger via laptop or cigarette lighter to usb adapter
tv - use tv add-on for laptop
Heater would be a no-no.

Small hairdrier uses approx 375w (Daughter's Boots jobby) (or stick your head out of the window as you're driving)
Straighteners use 18w (daughter's not mine)
My 14" lcd tv uses 65w if on mains.
So if you really must have your 230v a 500watt inverter should suffice, check you wattage on your hairdrier and adjust required maximum accordingly.
Ones like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Car-Boat-500W-Pow ... 7C294%3A50 are good for 400 watts continuous/500w for 30 minutes ( the 1000 watts peak will cope with the switch on current required for a lot of things) ....£27 - look for the continuous power rating not the maximum.
I have used various ones from China 150w, 300w,500w and 2000w all are well made with good quality components inside ( I check them inside!). They tend to be from one manufacturer and are then re-badged.
Hope this helps.

I have a Ring Powersource 500W inverter. What I like about this one is that the fan only cuts in if it is getting hot or there is a heavy load on it. With the 'cheaper' inverters the fan tends to run regardless, even if you're just charging a phone which is irritating (to me at least). You can get them occassionally on ebay for 50ish quid.

Alternatively I believe straighteners that run off small gas cartridges are available, some of the girls from my church had them when we went away as a church.h
