Westy rear window seal

Post by Holydiver »

Can anyone help??

Van is 91 Westy with double glazed windows

I'm getting conflicting info regarding the rear window (tailgate) seal, I had to replace the seal last year and at the time I could only get an after market one (JK) but unfortunately it leaks even after the garage has sealed it using the correct sealer.

My local VW dealer is telling my that the seal is the same for glass or double glazed units, but they're out of stock in the UK & Germany, so I tried a VW spares supplier who told my that the seal for the double glaze unit is different and are now obsolete.

Is this true ?? and if so does anyone know where I could get one from???

Did the back (plastic double glazed) screen on my 1990 Atlantic a couple of years ago after getting the inner door skin welded up & painted following years of it leaking. I am 99% sure that I used a standard (VAG) rear window seal and sealed it all round from the outisde using black sikaflex window sealant (following advice from on here). The sealing is a horrible job which takes ages & leaves you with black hands for days but i have had no leaks at all since doing it and it has been out in some serious weather over the last couple of years.
Cheers

I have seen some original-quality EPDM rubber window seals around that should be as good as the VW ones. As I recollect Custom and Commercial have them. Look for the formed corners, and they may have 'EPDM' marked on them. The aftermarket foamy seals used on the front doors and slider that I've had a look at seem not be near the quality of the VW ones though.

For sealing I've used both sikaflex and a soft butyl rubber cord (or tape as they call it) from VW. The advantage of the cord is that it can be removed later if needed, wheras with sikaflex the seal will need to be cut away.
Syncrosport (taking a break as of summer 2024)
