2.1 MV water leaking

Post by johnlampett »

Hello,

I have a water leak which appears to be coming from the sump
Their is a slotted plug near the Oil sump plug and the trickle of water seems to be coming from their when the engine is running.

Anyone any ideas, what is likely to the problem ? any fixes ?

thanks

John

The 'slotted plug' is the over-pressure relief valve. Sounds like the leak is running from a waterjacket seal or perhaps the oil cooler/warmer.

Thanks

That does not sound good
Is that the water jacket that is over pressure ?

No the waterjacket seal is the rubber gasket/seal between the heads and the water jacket.

The over-pressure relief valve is from the crankcase.

Yep, you need to find out where it is actually leaking out.
It will be running down from somewhere and ending up near the aforementioned oil pressure release valve (slotted) cover.

If it turns out to be coming from the large visible black rubber seal that runs all the way around the heads, between them and the main cylinder casing, post back soon.

There have been a few posts on here about this (fairly common) problem.
As far as I can tell from reading, and also having it happen to me, it can be =

A - Be fixable without stripping anything down :)
B - Very serious and could well end up in needing a new engine

In the mean time, keep a close eye on the water level, you DO NOT want to get any air-locks on these engines !!

Read this = https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 2#p7381272" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But establish WHERE the leak is coming from before considering it as a "fix"

Got home ok without any major loss of coolant in the expansion tank

I have looked for the leak but without sucess really, I can't actually see the leak source.
Their is water, or liquid, built up in the engine mountings in front of the water pump. But I cant see how it got their.
The engine is really noisey, and the water pump pully seems loose on the shaft.
I guessing the water pump bearing has gone ? Explains why my battery light was coming on on the way home as well.

Oh yes, also found my tail pipe missing as well -
Only had its MOT on Monday - passed no problems
