How long should the brake shoe retaining pin be??? Are they all the same length??? Cheers.

all same length, longer than most other vehicles, so nicking ones of other cars not helpful generally, ditto the bags of bits in halfwits, I haven't any here to measure though.
But etos says they are 39mmx4mm and vw price 54p plus vat each
