Freaking Squeaking OSF

Post by Stefvan »

I have got a really annoying squeaking coming from my OSF front wheel. Both bearings have been changed - no difference. The wheel seems to spin freely when I jack it up but sometimes there is a little resistance - but no squeak. Its happening all the time, but is most apparent at low speed, happens once per rotation, and keeps squeaking even when I apply the brakes hard. Please give me some pointers as to what to try as its driving me freaking nuts !

I note you say the noise is once per rotation? but are you sure this isn't collapsed top wishbone bushes? very common issue...

Don't want to alarm you but i had this very symptom two weeks ago, i removed the hub cap and notice grease around it with little iron fillings in it, i drove me T3 into town to get another bearing kit and about 200 yards from my house the bearing colapsed and split my hub / disc aswell managed to limp her home but she was vor'ed until my new hub came through, no probs since i fitted the new parts :D

Thanks Kev I will give that a try, Red Westie I know its not the wishbone bushes, theyve just been done, that was more of a rubbery squeak... that came with every speed bump.. probably more infuriating !
Thanks for the heads up Happy Camper, Im pretty sure I had the same noise before I had the wheel bearings done.. unfortunately that wasn't the cause !

will report if it goes away

You haven't got alloy wheels with weights on the inside rim have you.....catching the calliper once every rotation.....that drove hubby mad until we discovered purely by accident what it was!!! We switched a front wheel for a back one, as less weights on the back one, and didn't catch. n fact, that could be a good way of testing wheel / fitting....take it off and change it with another wheel.....see if the noise goes away?

Good luck

Update.. still got the squeaking noise, I was sitting in the passenger seat (LHD) and realised the noise is coming from the central area near the heater vents, not the wheel at all ! Can't for the life of me figure out where it would be coming from as there don't seem to be many moving parts in this area, apart from maybe the speedo cable ?

My front grill squeaks! It lightly rubs on the surround... Took me ages to find it but as yours does it with wheel rotation that shouldn't be your problem! :D
