Re: t 25 engines
Really I would say you have to go on condition of the vehicle... if its good and the layout that suits you, then the engine can be upgraded later..
But.. a 1600cc non turbo diesel with 50hp when new isnt going to set the road on fire... they also have to be driven quite hard to make progress... thus usually last about 100k miles... now if its been really well looked after by an old gent/lady that drives it carefully... it should be good for a few more k's....
Quite a few on here have fitted a 1.9 non turbo... helps quite a bit... and not too costly to do..

be more concerend about body work.
with the diesel set up you can fit many replacement engines from various vw cars petrol or diesel.
if its a td then you can fit a later 1,9 td
rust free however can be more expensive to sort out . also chances are the van hasent been thrashed as much with a 1.6 diesel in it , although the motor may have been.
drive it tho and make sure your happy with the current power , or lack of until you can upgrade

Re: t 25 engines
As the others say, I would be more concerned about rust than engine specification.
I wouldn't be put off by a 1.6 diesel. I have a 1.6TD in my Westy and it's certainly not fast but it seems to be more than enough power for most occasions. I use it as a second car and it has no problem accelerating in city traffic. The only time I ever notice a lack of power is on very long uphill motorway sections fully loaded with all my camping gear and family where I find I struggle to keep the speed above 60 MPH. It's got plenty of poke to pull the van along in excess of 70 mph on the straight and level, but I wouldn't recommend driving at that sort of speed in a T25 anyway. The fuel economy is great though. I get about 37 miles per gallon on the motorway. Perhaps even more when not fully loaded.
Best of Luck
