little pump

Post by rubyvan »

HI
Can anyone tell me why the little auxillary water pump (at the back of the engine on a diesel 1.6 jx) keeps running and running it does not switch of at all
Cheers

some electrical fault most likely.

The pump should only run when the engine is turned over by the starter (to stop it from seizing) or after switching off when the temp sensor says it's too hot (over 105 deg C, I believe)

Sorry that I can't be of more help, but I'm dyslexic when it comes to electrics

Have read up on this as had a similar issue -

Have you tried plugging it back in, first thing, on a cold engine? Is the pump running still? Then its going to be the temp sensor me thinks.

The 'little' pump turns over with the starter motor to stop it seizing. I believe it only comes on when the engine is switched off and hot - takes over because the 'big' water pump goes off - keeping the coolant moving stopping engine cracking etc
It will run for a good while if your engine is hot /just switched off.

Do you have other overheating / cooling issues , mine was a slipping / loose belt on the 'big' water pump.

Hope this helps
