Single pin Temp sender

Post by kevtherev »

After refilling the cooling system I found that the original sender on the metal syncro thermostat housing, refused to work

I have just fitted a new sender from my local GSF.
the temp is now reading 3/4 steady after a good run, instead of the usual bit under half way.
Even in a queue it remained steady

The sender was described as a pre '85 single point, as no other was on offer I took it and fitted it.
Question is...
Are these senders common to all models?
Or does my system need bleeding again?

I have all manner of problems with those senders, usually worse than the one that came off.
Come in plain bags, Chinese origin I presume.

Beru = German brand, duuno where they are actually made but German quality control, it's a bit different to Chinese quality control...

Bit late now as the sender is fitted but If you have the DG sender that was fitted in the 1.9DG and the gauge worked fine I would pop it in a pan of boiling water and measure its resistance. Any future senders that you buy should be tested using the same method. If the reading is lower then the gauge will read higher and vice versa. You can then eliminate any probs with the gauge/sender and concentrate on possible coolant issues.

OK I'll order one off your site Simon
I just can't see why it's reading so high..if it carried on climbing I could understand.

good Idea angelo..I will test the old sender the old old sender and the new one.
any ohms for reference?

Boiling point about 100 ohms or thereabouts but you will get a reference value from the old sender if pre 86 are different, never tested one of those but will in all likely hood be similar.

sensible Kev, I always test senders and stats before fitting them even if they are new. Like Simon says, you can't rely on some parts/suppliers and theres always the possibilty of a rogue one in a batch.
