where does this pipe go?

Hi, On my T25 CU Aircooled engine is a flexible corrugated pipe approx 3inch diametre that starts from the vacuum unit behind the airfiler. It finishes about inline with the alternator but is not connected to anything! Should this be connected to something?

There is a solid plastic pipe that has two outputs of similar diametre that seems to take in cold air from the outside of the van. This pipe is located under the edge of the engine bay, right of the alternator/ fan?

do you think my mysterious pipe from the vacuum unit shoud be fixed to the pipe with 2 outputs?

if anyone has any pictures of this pipe and where it should go on the CU engine that would be really helpful.

Hi, this photo is taken from the back of the bus. It shows the offending pipe on the right hand side passing over the altenator.

Its the air intake pipe and should conected to one of the pipes in the air duct.. (its not totaly needed to be connected as its still drawing in fresh air there...) the underside of the air control unit (with the vac pipe on it) should be able to suck warm air from under the tin... IIRC

So it may be beter to just leave it if it wont improve the running of the engine? I thought if it wasnt connected up it may cause the engine to become hot.

connect it up , it will pull cooler air in.

i left the ducting in even after fitting dual twin chokes on my ol Aircooled wedge.

It wont pull any cooler air in, not really... as its on the "cold side of the engine so the engine is pulling in a lot of "cool" air to the engine bay.. what is important though the seal between the engine tin and chassis MUST be in good condition and fitted properly (ie NO GAPS)...

Poor running will be the worn out standard carbs... need a rebuild someone like Steve at Gasure does them..., dirt in the carbs and air leaks.... along with the normal stuff like poorly tuned/timed/serviced etc etc

i disagree, while its on the cooler side, the duct connects up to a snorkel by the rear air vent, air will be cooler there than sat on top of warm tinware. vw designed it to be connected so for the sake of a coulpe of mins work stick it back on!!!

you are right in saying about the bay seal, thats mighty important

The dual pipe thing which i was considering connecting it up to could possibly left over from an old porsche engine which was in before i purchased the van. There is also a fan inside the pipes which are not connected.

Sorry this may sound a bit thick. But i am trying to learn!! Trying to do a bit of a mini service myself also air filter, oil change. How would i know if it is an electonic ignition or not? The spark plug type which has come out is a Bosch W8CC which is not listed under either conventional or electronic ignition spark plug reccomendations.

Also the plug is very sooty. Is there a simple adjustment to alter the running to rectify this or is it a garage job?
