Quick question.....What AT tyres on 16" mercs?

Post by KarlT »

Hi.
I've got some 16" merc rims that I'm wanting to but AT tyres on. What do you recommend? Don't really want to go bigger than 215 wide.

after a bit of research i ended up going for general grabber at 2`s, although i went for looks over performance and got 255/65/16. lots of good reviews on the us sites and i`m happy with the steering feel and quietness of them.

I went for 205R16 Goodyear AT on my standard 16" rims and I'm pleased with the road manners and traction in snow/dirt. A good compromise I feel.

Next time round I was looking at the Michelin Agilis M&S van tyres as they are adequately load rated. They come in a range of sizes and I would probably stop at 215 as well. Wide is not always the best when off road as well as reducing your turning circle/impinging on you arches etc.

when fully loaded and heavy compression i can get a little buzz when the tyre touches the plastic arch at the front if the steering is at a particular angle " mines a 16" ". i needed to reduce the caster angle slightly but this has resulted in making the steering surprisingly light.

running merc ml`s 20mm spacers at the rear and 16mm spacers at the front from baxter. sliding door just touches the tyre slightly with standard hindge.

speedo is quite a lot out and gearing is a lot longer as its running 14" cwp`s aswell

settled on grabber at`s

i did try 245 70 16`s khumos but felt them to be to big.

Bridgestone Dueler M/T LT225/75R16 on my 14". Have spacers but not sure what thickness.

Scrap a bit when cornering aggressively or across really bumpy ground. This is due more to the softness of the springs and shocks rather than the tyre size. It also sounds like the Millennium Falcon.

I've got 215/70 R16s (Goodyear wrangler ATRs) with no clearance issues. My previous 225/75 R15s were wider and had a bigger circumference with higher gearing but I was expecting clearance problems with 225s or /75s on a 16" rim so didn't go there.

It'll depend on the offset of your wheels as well

That's way I'm thinking. Any pics of how they look? Can you give me a diameter measurement? Can you remember what you paid? Cheers

didn`t get to use the khumo`s on the road as i was only trying them for size and they had to be resold.

mate of a mate had them on a landy and he swore by them, not noisey and good on and off road. i`m putting a set of full muds on the 16" steels so i can use them off road and on the doka i`ll keep the at`s for general use.

i`ve had 205 /16 and 225 / 75 / 16 and both work on a 16" but not so sure on a 14".

215/75r15 is nconsidered the largest acceptable size for a 14"....
Power is usually the next thing to cause problems... or lack of.....
I am running 205/70r15 mud tyres as I only have a 78bhp 1.9 DG to play with in my Doka.... She really wouldnt like to pull the 215's on the road...

Hi Karl
Sorry it's taken me a while to reply - busy trying to build a garage :?

Pics of tyres as follows. The do look a bit weedy compared to the old 225/75 15s, but hey, they're doing a perfectly good job! They were about £69 each when I bought the first 5 last year, but when I got round to treating myself to a 6th recently it was £79! Bloody inflation, I might plant a rubber tree!

Hope you decide soon. My tip would be to think about weight ratings if you're going to carry around a lot of heavy stuff. At 800kg each, these are quite a bit less than BFGoodrich's, which worried me a bit when I was taking a huge load of concrete rubble down to the tip the other week. I didn't realise until I'd bought them

Since we are talking tyre size i use 245 75 16 BF mud terrains on my syncro 16.
And i use 10.5R 20 MPT continentals on my LT.
