Remove fuel feed from carb.
use a self tapper to remove the black plastic gauze filter fitted inside the brass inlet.
Clean all the "pooh" out of it.
Put it back in.

Just wanted to thank everyone again for their input on this. Managed to get the rotor arm off in the end - took a hacksaw to it as suggested by toomanytoys then mole grips and a good pull eventually did it, though it was in pieces by the end. No anti flash over seal on the dizzy so I covered the opening with a rag to stop anything going down there. Following Simon Baxter's advice I also cleaned up the little filter in the fuel feed on the carb - it was pretty grubby in there.
It started up after a little perseverance and definitely runs better than before. Seemed to take a bit of throttle too so I took it for a quick spin only to have it cut out on me, but thankfully only 50 yards from home.
Next job will be to follow advice given about the carb (a Pierburg 2E3 btw). Planning on removing it and giving it a thorough clean and replacing gaskets and suspect hoses..... I'm sure I'll have more questions soon...
