Yes it is something you could do with the engine in.. but you need to support the engine well to be able to drop the rear mounting bar... of course, the botls could be rusted and difficult to remove etc... could be a right pain...

rough guide

get it on the ramps
support the engine
disconnect the battery
dump the water
disconnect the water pipes
disconnect the gear linkage
remove the tinware
take out the silencer shroud bolts
undo the four bolts holding the engine bar to the body
loosen gearbox mount
lower it
remove the shroud

change the mounts

nice weekend job :ok

There's no need to drop the coolant Kev ! The engine stays where it is, + or - an inch or 2 .

If the new mounts are from GSF or Justkampers have a dremmel or a round file ready to get the holes in the right place cause none of mine were :x
fitted new ones a couple of months ago.

I was told by a dutch man that our german friends who couldn't afford to buy the new water cooled vans when the first came out decided to make there older Aircooled ones look modern by sticking an optional lower grill on. How right it is I don't know but is one explanation we saw a few like it when we went to dutch show.

Carefully press them tightly onto the mounting bar in the vice as near as they'll fit and a tiny bit of round file work and they'll go on.
