Re: disabling manual petrol 1.9 automatic clutch?
You dont mean clutch - you mean auto choke...
A properly serviced and set up carb will work fine.....
Removing the auto choke wont help much unless you really love to sit there trying to keep it running and get some heat into it before moving off else it will stall pretty quickly... come winter time, then you will have reall trouble keeping it running...
VW didnt fit it for no reason why mess about with it...
Cold starts wear engines... so just avoid lots of cold starts and short trips...

Re: disabling manual petrol 1.9 automatic choke ..
yep sorry, auto choke, it's so hot in here i think i am going to pass out. i am not a fan of stp oil treatment etc, i dont' really want to use it but it's supposed to be good for cold starts, supposedly coating the rocker with oil and helps with wear. but i guess it's not something you recommend? ordinary oil must do the same job and coat the parts, i mean it can't *all* drain off the top end of the engine can it?

i think maybe you need to understand your engine a bit first.
Its a flat4, there is no "top" of the engine when you are talking oil draining off the rockers, they are on the ends.
its going to be 20 years old at least, so will have already done the damage you are worried about before you got it im guessing..... its a VW, it will be fine.... just dont rev the nadds of it when its cold..and use good quality mineral oil.
as has been said, Mr VW didnt put the choke on there for fun, methinks the other bloke was winding you up!
