Seems the only time I do this is for help when something has gone wrong and its gone wrong!!
Just put my engine back in today after having some work done to the engine bay, when the engine was out i thought it would be a good idea to change the timing belt and tensioner.
I did this as the book, using the correct tools to lock the fuel injector pump and the bar to lock the cam blah blah!!!
So engine in and ancillaries connected and ready to try, so this is what happened.
Turned key, left the glow plug light to go out and also had the cold starter pulled out but wasn't havin any of it!!
Several more attempts to start and the engine run but seemed very noicey (more than usual) would not idle and loads of smoke from the exhaust!!
Is there any way of checking the timing and adjusting it with the engine in?

All help and advice it greatly appreciated!!

Also does anyone know a veedub mechanic in Northamptonshire just incase i can't do it? cheers
