timing out or do I need to adjust the carb..

Post by boardmonkey »

Hi,

I have spent 2 months stripping down and rebuilding my lump, exhaust and all the other issues Ive had after blowing head gasket...Its a Manual 1.9DG WBX

I think my timing is out, as the van is running dog rough, it takes an age to fire up and then just about turns over, really chuggy...a mate of mine came over and did get it running better by adjusting the carb both the idle and mixture..

Its possible ive moved the dizzy, but I dont recall doing it...Ive checked it with the No1 cylinder at TDC, mark on the flywheel is at 12 o'clock and the mark on the dizzy seems to be in the right place with the picures in the haynes manual.... :?

Ive got one of those chunky limiting rotor arms, should the brass nose be bang central with the line on the dizzy ? Its slightly off...could that cause my grief ?

Ive also just replaced the throttle cable, which does need tweaking a little as its pulling a little tight on the carb end

I just want the awkward bitch to run ok so I can bleed the coolant once more and to get her MOT done.

Any ideas ? I almost threw my spanners out the pram earlier, so frustrating after all the work Ive done..

Cheers...!

Dear Boardmonkey, best bit of advice I can offer is to leave it alone for a few days and try to forget all that has gone on in the past and simply start afresh.
Then when you are ready to return, Read on,,,,, :D

1, Are you sure after your re build that you have 4 decent compressions to work with ? If not, why not ? is it due to the tappets being over adjusted during the re build,if in doubt... check them again.

2, Once you are happy with stage 1, then make sure any pipe work including vacuum units and related hoses are in good working order, if not then replace as required.

3,Set basic ignition timing to the instructions in your Haynes or other manual (provided all related ignition items are in usable condition).

4, Carb linkages and cables must also be correctly fitted prior to any attempts to start.

5, Ideally carburettor adjustments should be checked/stabilised on a proper anyliser ( but for initial starting the mixture screw needs to be at least 2 full turns (out) from its seat in the carb body) Once again provided the carb has been/is known to be clean of any rubbish or water.

Regards

Hello,

Thanks for the response.

1, Are you sure after your re build that you have 4 decent compressions to work with ? If not, why not ? is it due to the tappets being over adjusted during the re build,if in doubt... check them again.

Will do, I can feel theres compression on all cylinders, did check the tappets twice myself and again once with a friend ( as wasnt really sure about them)

2, Once you are happy with stage 1, then make sure any pipe work including vacuum units and related hoses are in good working order, if not then replace as required.

Have ordered some new vacuum hoses as mine are a little tatty...

3,Set basic ignition timing to the instructions in your Haynes or other manual (provided all related ignition items are in usable condition).

4, Carb linkages and cables must also be correctly fitted prior to any attempts to start.

Going to re-adjust today, lubricate and grease up where necesssary.

5, Ideally carburettor adjustments should be checked/stabilised on a proper anyliser ( but for initial starting the mixture screw needs to be at least 2 full turns (out) from its seat in the carb body) Once again provided the carb has been/is known to be clean of any rubbish or water.

Ah, that I will also do. I may even take it off altogether and blow it through with an airline..

Regards and Thanks for your suggestions..

If the engine was running fine fuel-wise before rebuild why would it need adjusting now ? Get a manual and set the timing by the book, fine adjustment can be done later with a strobe light.
