Smoking exhaust after accelerating

Post by west E »

Hi all,

I have 2ltr Aircooled with dellorto drla 36 carbs. after my van has warmed up and i stick my foot down to say 3000rpm for a bit and then release it i get loads of smoke coming out of the exhaust. The smoke is a blueish colour. Can anyone let me know what it could be. I thought it might be oil or unburnt fuel but i ain't no mechanic.

thanks

ian

usually an indicator of worn valve guides, stem seals, or overfilling but there may be other causes that I am unaware of!

If this was a Cortina/$ierra/Granada you'd say 100% valve stem seals .... smoking on the over run, thus my money's on the valve guides I'm afraid.

Check the easy things first...
What have you done with the crank case breathers??? if these have been blocked off you are generating a lot of pressure in the crank case... this pref needs feeding into the filters to generate a slightly negative pressure..

What oil are you using?? A good mineral 15w40/15w50 or even 20w50 is ideally whats needed...

No valve stem seals... so either guides are worn or the piston rings are...

i ran these carbs on my a/c wedge and fitted a catch tank for the breather as it has nowhere to go.

plus you should vent the rocker cover boxes as the big carbs can cause crankcase vent probs.

buy a cheapie empi kit but use proper hose.

makes a big difference.

you aint got my old bus have you!!!
