diesel leak causing smoke in engine bay

Sorry to be a pain, I have read with interest the problems with filling up to the brim, but i was checking out the mplitre, I now know my tank has prob corroded at the top and my breathers are prob perished too, but would it cause fuel to leak out of the tube to the left of the starter, coming out of the engine (1.6 diesel) and cause lots of smoke,? we had to pull over in a hurry as it was a bit worrying. lucky not too far from home so got her back. cant help thinking it will settle down when fuel level drops. currently doing 7.7miles per litre? many thanks Gav

Check your steel fuel pipes between thepump and the injectors. Mine cracked once and sprayed diesel over the engine.

Wouldn't that be on the return to the tank?
Someone who has replaced that section will hopefully come along with the bore and the length needed to replace it.

I tried it again today. every thing ran fine on the drive. took it for a run and the "return tube" hissed smoke again. it looks like a bad repair so i will try and replace it bbefore I run her again.

put new clips on the hose, it went back to the radiater? noticed the water level was very low so need to investigate

is that not one of the heater hoses then?

could be , I'm learning as i do it, manual in post would be handy! I have discovered no water in system, so have checked thermostat filled up and bleed, checked fan by touching terminals, i have 3 and only 1 way works??????? should be a high and low fan in haynes are right. but I'm working off a petrol manual my van is 1.6 diesel. just running her to hot se if fan cuts in. stay with me please

To check the fan which should be 2 stage (i.e. on and faster) take the 3 pin connector off the sensor screwed into the radiator behind the bottom grill and insert a small piece of wire between each in turn ... you'll find one is the supply to the switch (live all the time) and the other two are slow and fast speed respectively. At least you, like I needed to, will then know the fan is working ok and therefore the switch isn't.

Just to up date . after investigating cooling system, pressure cap seams to be stuck open therefor losing pressure and system wont work, so that has been replaced! the pipe from pressre cap was blocked which caused the initial burst of hoses. so far so good, no longer overheats, wired rad fan to dash switch so have control when needed.
