Carb problem..timing?

Post by katykoo »

2 litre CU...Van is running following cylinder head replacement, and has new leads, filters, sparks etc.

She is running albeit sounding pretty rough andloud, though she will idle on her own when warmed up. We've checked all the hoses for signs of air leaks..I still can't pull off in gear as the engine dies... HELP!!

Try changing the fuel filter and cleaning the carbs out. Mine was running like that, found the filter full of crap, the next thing is to find where its all coming from. I'm guessing the tank is rotten
Mmm what's that strange smell from my exhaust...

Who replaced the head(s)?? has everything been put back together correctly... "sounding pretty rough and loud" isnt what you would be expecting from having work done on the engine.....

Where abouts in east midlands are you???

Thanks..the fule filter is clean and is only a year old..the van was running absolutely fine, with no problems with the carb before the rebuild. Only the left hand carb came off during rebuild, and was stuck back on with new gaskets, so can't see how its been seriously disturebd?

The van has been sat on a drive since August last year...

The van has been sat on a drive since August last year...

Ah so though it was running fine when it stopped, its sat for 8 months...

Maybe you should just be thorough, and check what is being suggested first, before moving on... e.g. the carb float chambers and needle valves

Once again, has the dizzie been out or disturbed?

I presume its been sat while the head was done, not sat since the head was done....

Maybe getting it hooked up to an analyser will tell you what vital ingredient is missing? In this crunchclimate, I bet you could get 30 mins mobile mechanic van pretty cheap, well spent if they get a good diagnosis.

Steve 8090 may be able to help too, not too far away. AA member?

Thanks guys..

In answer- the van dropped a valve last august, and hasn't budged off my drive since then. She is SORNED and her MOT expired in Feb..So hasn't driven since then. She previously ran fine.

The dizzie was out, as the hall sender had some wires lose that have now been fixed, but has been put back in and right as far as we can tell. I know will get a mechanic out..to check carbs etc thanks

Maybe check those Wiki links for the CU timing curves then, before they arrive... so the vac and cent advance can be checked.

Although symptoms DO sound like lack of fuel or gross air-leak

by noisey , could it be the tappets?
a poorly or incorrectly seated push rod could make for rough running, valves either not closing or fully opening??

personally i would be whipping the rocker covers off and looking to see if the pushrods are seated properly in the tappets and checking the mechanical timing , both against the dissy markings at TDC and that rockers are not too tight or too loose.

next port of call would be the zorst port connections to the zorst and the inlet manifolds to the heads.

there is a damn fine Aircooled man newark side of nottingham, IF you can get him to answer his phone, and if he hadnt been pushed out of this club.... i fairbet he could look at it with his eye closed and diagnose the problem!
try Dubliminals forum????
