got to work today and notised some steam at the back when i was parking, filled up the water tank and gingerly drove to my dads, it turned out that the plastic top section of the thermostat housing distorted some how and the water was peeing out. no drama then after cheaking with adian went to see the spanerman and got one from a 1.9 that was in his yard. got it on, let the engine run for about 20 min bled everything, no leaks all good or so i thought!
Drove the van home about 3 miles in trafic. the temp guage reads at 12 o clock. and it was weeping at the same place. gave the bolts a nip and that seamed to do the trick. however there is a rubber pipe that comes of the lower side at the back of the engine of the metle pipe from the water pump and you guessed it this started to leak around the juberly clip that holds it in place.
can i cut and join this pipe with a male to male spiggot or should you always replase the entire pipe. dose any one know where a spiggot can be bought from.are these pipes still avalible
are there any outher pipes that i should replace while it is drained (or part drained) down?
many thanks neil

Hi Neil, which is the bit you need on here:

I have a N.O.S. 025 121 081 G here if you need one, and several other of the steel pipes as well.

Neil
is this the 1" rubber pipe hose that goes from the big metal pipe to the heater matrix, front left of engine before the rubber join to the tstat housing ? There's a jointing connector for this size hose available as there's a join just in front of the rear cross member. I have some preloved hose and should have a male/male joint too, be careful though the spigot on the metal pipe is reknown for splitting off the pipe so it may be the metal rather than the hose that's at fault

Re: my van is having a pink wee
thanks adian.
i sceam to be chasing leaks at the moment, i am going to replace the entire metle section from the water pipe as mine is very rusty. if you have a spigot and about 15cm of pipe it would be grate if you could post it to me and let me know what you want for it. there is also a slight weep (slight drip) coming from the heat exchanger (or oil cooler). which i also have to address. going to order a new one from GSF with a new seal and hopfully that will be the end of this water issues.
thanks neil

Re: my van is having a pink wee
don't use the cheap oil cooler seal get a genuine VW one with the ears as it's easier to fit with the engine insitu, if you use the cheap one you will have to use instant gasket to stick it to the oil cooler before fitting and it's possible it will not be sitting right when fitted and you may still have the leak. When I did this job on mine I found that one of the metal spigots off the top of the oil cooler had corroded through under the rubber pipe so I had to swap oil cooler too, and a couple of the rubber joining pipes and most of the clips.
I haven't got the spigot of the metal pipe, you won't need it if you are replacing the whole pipe but I can stick 6" of rubber pipe and a joiner to you, pm me an adress.
