lifting slowly up on the clutch .. stalls ..

hi there, i have to add some gas when lifting up from a standstill slow on the clutch, usually the cars i have driven roll along on idle and just roll.

is it because of the weight of the van or should it do the same, why is my van stalling, i can actuall feel the engines revs lowering as i lift the clutch and it cuts out. always needs a little push of gas to move it along.

is that normal or ..

any ideas?

really? is that to do with the carb? all the cars i have driven i can real slow lift up the clutch and it just rolls in first.

my 1.9DG will roll along in first on tickover when I need to, I often have to drop the clutch to slow it down in traffic jams ,brakes or hills will stall it .

yea it does roll along in tickover, just that there's a bit of a flatspot when i am lifting on the clutch. thanks for the feedbackies!

"modern" fuel injected vehicles have electronics which adjust idle speed and try an counter the revs dropping... the VW has a carb and no such fancy electronics... it has a small screw that sets idle... a little throttle is required...

As indicated...modern vehicles from the mid 90's typically have anti stall devices fitted (idle stabilisation valve on the fuel injected T25's) which open to counter any stalling sensed. Plus what you are talking about when pulling away is a power to weight issue. T25's generally have low power output but weigh a considerable amount . The power produced at idle is quite small in comparrison to the vehicles weight so the initial movement from stationary on a vehicle this heavy and not equipt with antistall.....you catch my drift
Also carb equipt vehicles can't control their fuel mixture as accurately so don't have as smooth a power delivery especially at low speed. Combine all these things and your vehicles behaviour comes as no suprise and is in no way a fault as such. Giving it a little throttle possibly activates the accelerator pump which overcomes the hesitation felt trying to pull away from idle.

wow cheers guys! great answers. where's the screw that sets idle speed, and i have an early t25 do you think i have the idle speed regulator thingy? also, can i set the carb for maximum fuel efficiency? cheers!
