Hello,
I've got a 1981 2000cc air cooled joker and the lights
on the sink unit front don't go out, are they supposed to?
Also is there supposed to be a 240 rcd somewhere for when
you hook up? It's a L/H German model so maybe it's wired differently.
Thanks for any advice.

The lights stay on as long as there is power to the circuits - 3 led for water tank level & leisure battery charge, reducing as each resource gets used up (if it's the same as my display panel anyway) If they go out there's no water in the tank & no power from the leisure batery. From factory, they will stay on if plugged in on 240v hook up.
Probably no RCD installed originally in a German import, mine didn't have anyway...
Rip it out and do it "properly" from the plug inwards would be my advice. Take power to a charger via a consumer unit (under the back seat) and then 2 circuits out for lights and power sockets. Have a look at the wiki for wiring diagrams, but just wait a bit until someone who knows what they are doing & can explain things better than I can arrives

Thanks for the advice Andi, I'm going to attempt the 240v rewire
when I get all the bits together. As for the leds, I just thought it
strange that there's no switch to that 12v leisure circuit, it must
be a slight drain on the battery if it's stood over time.

Actually they are noit supposed to be on at all I don't think - I presume your van is an 81 Westfalia? I have two now, an 81 and an 82, and both panels are dead UNLESS you fiddle with the toggle switches on the front. They shouls, normally speaking, be in the left hand position - there then should be no leds on...

You got me there Helga, I haven't got any toggles to fiddle with
My leisure battery has a cut off switch though and yes, if that's off there's no display.

What conversion is yours Andi? Frank's is a 81 Joker, so should be the same as mine - standard westfalia facia with two toddles on the front of the cooker / fridge area? Yes?

Helga, mine is a 1980 Westy Vanagon interior, but retro fitted.
It's the same as this one, including the fabric
.
On the later ones there does seem to be a switch on the panel to switch off the leds, but I haven't got one on mine, hence the cut off on the the leisure circuits.
There's a story how my interior came to be fitted to a much later van, but I'l not bother everyone with it now
