What are these?

Post by FlowerPower »

Hi all

I'm going to replace most of my exhaust tomorrow (from elbow to tail pipe on 1986 DG) and it all arrived from JK today, including the fitting kit.

Inside the kit is everything I expected: nuts, bolts, gaskets, but also these 2 rings. What on earth are they?

p.s. my haynes manual has decided to disappear.
Peace and Love and .... ummmm all that.

I found the Haynes manual (not a great help) and there appears to be something between elbow and manifold pipe that resembles one of these. Haynes refer to it as a seal. I'll have a look when I take it apart and see if it could go there. Still don't know why there's 2 of them though.

Well if they don't go anywhere else, I shall be forced to accept your suggestion and ....well....wear them.

The "later" style system???

These rings are seals.. you should have a "link pipe" that goes between the cast knuckle and the silencer, 1 seal each end on assembly... (there are a couple of styles though so you may need 1"ring" at one end and a large triangular gasket at the other...) remember not to do anything up tight until you have it all in place.. then you can move things about to get it in a nice position without tension, dont try and wrang the bolts and nuts up super tight either... especially on the cast knuckle as these have a tendancy to crack... use plenty of copperslip on the threads...
