1.6 CT Aircooled?

Post by AngeloEvs »

Were these engines ever used on a Factory High top conversion, does anyone have one and what do they think of it? I appreciate that with 50HP its going to be underpowered but is that the only issue given that all the spares are readily availlable and wondered if the HP can be improved? Many thanks........

Well I have a CU and thats isnt powerful enought. Things can be dome like getting a better carb which would push an extra 10-20 horses but my advice is steer well clear. They are just guttless

The 1600CT can be modified slightly to increase the hp you can increase its engine capacity to 1720cc
Aircooled engines can be tinkered with and can really move. if you want to go down that route I only suggest you get intouch with a well known Air-Cooled specialist. ----------- :ok

hehehe I just Knew you would have to tell the world again about that

Seriously though as mentioned there are things you can do...

*Carb/s
1641 (not really worth it imo)
1776 - block and heads need machining though
performance cam (usually goes with the above)

biggest thing you can do is not to fill the fuel tank to THE spout - fill half each time/loose the spare wheel and carry instant tyre weld stuff/ don't carry loads f beer/water in there; buy it near the show/destination etc/tyre pressures make a difference and generally remove as much tosh out of the van as possible...weight= loow speeds and shoddy mpg's

Lastly you could just accept they are sloow (1.6/2.0/air or water - they are all pretty slow!) and hang out near the back-end of a truck!
It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

Honest, but true! They are guttless - the previous owner of my cu had wacking great new webbers put on - they p*ss the petrol in like fire engines, but the thing still moves at its own sedate pace.

I have a 1.6 CT, and have accepted i will always be at the back.... :rofl :rofl

Once you have accepted this you save heaps on a new engine to spend on LPG

Thanks for the replies, my only experience of the 1.6 a/c was our high Top Bay and wondered how folks cope with one in a High Top T25 which is probably heavier!

They are heavier..
Personally I wouldnt spend money on the CT.. they wern't very good new.... the 2L is a much better place to start... but several have had reasonable success with a bigger bore CT.. but its still essentially a type 1 engine and hauling a lot of weight..

Ours is a high top. We've not long finished running it in and my daily journey to work rarely allows me to go over 50mph.
I suspect that we'll still have a top speed of around 60mph, but that's ok, I'm not in a hurry, either getting to work or when we're off camping :D

IIRC, 60mph is about 4000 rpm on the stock CT gearing... which is about as far as the stock engine pulled... (IIRC 4k was peak power too a whole 50bhp...)
1776 will make a good difference especially if running a pair of ICTs etc... what carbs have you got??

We have a pair of weber 34 ibp's. Really need to get it on a rolling road, but funds won't allow that at the moment :(

So, to sum up....... the 1.6CT is a bit slow but getting spares is quick and cheap! With a large bore upgrade it could be alsmost comparable to a DF in terms of performance but still need the 1.6CT gearing giving a lower top speed? The latter doesn't bother me as I tootle along anyway. I like my DG (and never let me down to date) but I rely on it for getting to work (round trip 250 miles) and providing me with accomodation all year round. So when it goes I need to consider the options....repair, exchange, Suby swap, go a/c.....or downgrade to a T4, have no worries and lead a very boring post T25 existence.
