Make it three weeks and get a single ferry to Sardinia from Livorno, then get the ferry from Cagliari on Sardinia to Palermo on Sicily, then drive back up the west Coast of Italy via Etna and Pompei and Mt Vesuvius.

Thats what I would do, you might be paying for it for a while, but what a trip.

You cant go wrong on Sardinia, or Corsica, where ever you go.

Enjoy.

I'd settle for Corsica as my first outing that way; its closer and a great destination. We have been three times; never booked anything more than the ferries and had great fun just following our noses round the island. Stunning scenery, mountain landscapes and beaches.

In October you will find most campsites closed as out of season; I understand that Sardinia is much like Corsica apart from being italian as opposed to French. Both have an 'official' no wild camping rule.

Islands are bigger than you think; and driving around; especially in the mountains can take way longer than anticipated due to narrow windy roads. eg Cap Corse to Porto down the West coast of Corsica is an all day drive.

Anyway... back on subject, have not been to Sardinia so not much help :D
