1st & 3rd gears noisey

Post by Therunner »

hi, i've stupidly lent out all my haynes & i just want to know,
what's likely to be wrong when:

in 1st gear there comes quite a loud high pitchedish (hard to describe) noise from the rear,
don't use 1st for long, straight into 2nd & it's dead quiet, & nice,
but then comes 3rd which i'm quite often stuck in for a while, it's really noisey,
then in 4th it's instantly quiet again & quite a relief.
doesn't make any difference if you dip the clutch or not.

thanks
Kate

Just noticed you have an Aircooled ... Aidan doesn't 'do' air cooled boxes.

Sorry, Ian.

I knackered a gearbox by not realising it was leaking oil, it wouldn't do any harm to check and maybe change the oil before trying anything more expensive.

thanks, yep, first thing on the list i reckon, thanks for replying.

there're a couple of other things,
a horrid grinding/squeeking of the connecting rod at the front,
just above the fuel tank, feels like it's rubbing against
the underside of the van, couldn't get at it with the grease,
have to spray lubricate it every week to keep the noise down!

& reverse sometimes doesn't quite go in properly, no jumping out
of gear or anything yet, but strange that the issues are all on the gears
at the 'top' of the gear selector?
