Gearbox woes
My gearbox decided that it preferred 3rd to all the other gears yesterday, and so i was promptly recovered home. The gearbox has had it so its a case of getting a rebuild(expensive). But i was reading another post where a chaps box had gone bang and he mentioned about a scooby conversion? do you use the scooby box as well then? just wondered cos theres loads of them in my local scrappy!!
Carlsberg dont do campers.......... but if they did they'd build the T25

Hi
We had similar problem (Helga) wanted a rest from 3/4 gear and wouldnt let me use them unfortunatly we wear on the N12 100Km from Rosscoff on the first day of are trip to Malaga. After getting recovered on a sunday to a camp site then on the monday being taken to a main vw (cormershall) dealer (le problem intermitant) was diognosed. To cut a long story short we got home gear box off the oil seemed the wrong smell and there seemed to be far to much in the gear box. Put new gear box oil in going for a long run today seems ok at the moment.

Re: Gearbox woes
The box used to stick in 3rd regually until i changed the oil. has been good as gold for the last 6 months or so tho. I want to get it fixed properly tho as im supposed to be off across europe in 6 weeks! dont really fancy the idea of trying to cross a mountain range wit 1 gear!!
I have the box out on the floor now and have given it a good kick, that didnt fix it

Ooo... both sound like worn syncro rings... not good... and not good when they crack and break up, then you will only have "A" gear to choose.. or if more unlucky then the thing will lock up in a gear and will not allow the wheels to move.. by that time its usually become more expensive...

That made me laugh.........thanks!
I had gearbox problems too, my problem was that I couldn't get 3rd funnily enough. Theafter being in a garage the nice man couldn't 1st, 3rd or reverse. Telling me my gearbox was chuffed! I took it too a vw specialist and he fixed all gears in an hour. The linkage was all out of sync. Are you sure your box is really broken, its not just needing a tweak?
We are off to France/Europe in 6 weeks too, see you there!

As I can testify after being recovered from Belgium with a broken 4th/5th synchro hub. There's NO worse feeling than knowing your family's holiday has just come to an end

Re: Gearbox woes
ITS FIXED!!!
Firsly i can definitely say that it was the gearbox. I removed the bell housing and more metal came out than oil. And before someone says anything, no it wasnt low on oil
I had an old gearbox at the back of my garage that was removed from a van being used as a chicken coop/dog kennel that was a complete unknown quantity, and looked like had been buried in a bog for 80 years. But as so many people said," its worth a gamble", "what do you have to loose". I would answer, " my sanity".
So i put it in after a bit of messing around with seized nuts and bolts and it appears to work perfectly
Only thin is now, flat out im doing just under 60
(i used to cruise at 60) Never mind, will give me more opportunity to play the how big a traffic que you can build up behind me game:D
Cost of changing gearbox £10 for oil + a drink for ma buddy = Well chuffed Bendy
