Just had my alternator belt replaced as previous snapped through age/wear & tear. It looked secure, little bit of play, not too much. However, as soon as I move away I get the screeching sound normally associated with a slipping or worn belt. It's very loud in 1st and gradually reduces 'til 4th.
Any idea's anyone. Too tight, too slack, maybe rubbing against something perhaps? 1.6TD Westy
Cheers

Re: Screeching Alt belt
Too loose, the belt needs some tension.

Re: Screeching Alt belt
I have a 1987 1.6td - it has two belts one driving the waterpump and one from the water pump to the alternator don't know if yours is the same?
I had a similar problem and it was the water pump belt that was loose. Its tensioned by means of removing shims from betweeen the two halves of the pulley, but even with all shims removed and a new belt I couldn't tension it sufficiently and remove the squeals.
the belt was supposed to be a 643 mm belt, I was advised by fritz to try a belt 5mm smaller - a 636mm (closest I could get) did the trick
