White Smoke on an 88 Westy Diesel 1.6TD

Post by si macc »

Only owned this for a few weeks, drove the van back from Stoke On Trent to London with no problems what so ever. Van was grounded for a while as some kids had punctured my wheels and now after a few weeks the van kicks out some white smoke when you rev the engine.

Here's what I've done so far to diagnose the problem:

- Oil was low but now topped up
- Engine starts first time ever time
- No loss of power
- No misfiring
- Engine sounds fine and the turbo isn't making any funny noises
- White smoke only kicks out when revving the engine hard, higher the revs the more smoke there is
- Don't think there is any blue in the smoke
- Not really sure what I'm looking out for when smelling the smoke (diesel/coolant etc..)
- Coolant level is ok, have not had to top up
- Put some diesel injector cleaner in the with the fuel

I drove from London to the Isle of Wight last weekend and there was smoke on start but after a few miles it got less and less and then cleared all together. Thought the problem had gone away but went for a spin last night and he was smoking again. Its not a huge cloud but it's enough to worry me.

Anyone got any ideas on what I can do to solve/diagnose the problem? Would anyone recommend taking the van to get a service? If so how much would this roughly cost to just get him looked at?

Cheers!

Si

Sounds quite normal to me just keep your eye on all the levels (oil and water) if any sudden loss then it is time to worry.

Or try not to rev it hard at idle, I mean you don't drive it round flat out, or do you ?

drain the water trap , could be getting a wee bit of H2O into it at higher rev's

hey, maybe we could have "smoke off". Mines also smokey on start up but clears up almost immediately.

Good thought. Didn't even know they had them! Where is it and how do you do it?

should be in the r-h-corner of the engine bay , canister fuel filter with the drain in the bottom. unscrew the drain screw that the bottom ,until fluid starts coming out , drain it into a glass jar , about a 1/4 of a pint , then tighten it back up , restart the engine , may take a few turn and then even cut out , but will self bled back up.
leave the liquid in the jar for a few hours , if there is water there ,it will separate out.

You could even fit a new one while your there, cheap enough job to do , under £11.90 for the filter (depends which filter you have) and about 15 minutes of your time to do.

Would like to say mine clears immediately but it does take a few miles before its gone.

Will have a look at the trap today....if it stops raining!

Cheers for the advice. Will report back later.
