Diesel smell??????? but not all the time

Post by Big Boris »

Hi all,

On our weekend sojourn we also had a problem with the smell of diesel. Not when windows were shut but when open. We hadn't noticed it before on our other trial runs but this time had a bike rack on the back fully loaded.

We wondered if this somehow caused the exhasut not to fully clear the van.

Anyway....just wondered if anyone else has problems with the smell of diesel when windows open and if there is anything we should check or is it just one of those things????

Thanks all.

You shouldn't be smelling unburnt fuel. You'll need to get under there and inspect the whole fuel system for leaks. Starting points would be the tank and filler, and the pump.

A common fault is the rubber leak off hoses on the injectors, they perish and squirt fuel everywhere.

Try the filler neck and hoses leading to expansion tanks, if you are smelling it when windows open it is most likely from the tank area.
