tap tap

Post by soulboynumber1 »

Hi all, looking for some info.

Last Saturday i went for a spin in the can (a 1989 autohomes kameo) and the engine was making a right old tapping noise, tappets maybe.
I was a bit worried but after about 15 minutes of driving the noise disappeared? Can anyone shed light on this?

Thanks in advance

Dave

Assume we are talking about a petrol engine??
Fairly commmon in an engine that hasent been run for a while.
As you suspect, the tappets are probably to blame.
20 mins or so of motoring will pump them up.

It seems general advice is do an oil and filter change if this happens more than once or twice.

I've got G reg 1.9 DG petrol, T25. I have same problem and can't seem to get an answer or solution. I've jsut pulled the rocker covers off and checked all rods are sat nicely in the cups and there are no broken or loose bits!
As for getting the tappets filling with oil hoe do I know if this is happening and if it had been tapping for ages is it safe to assume that there is a problem and if so what do I do?
Sorry for question but all the answers seem to be change oil and filter and it will go away, I've done this and it hasn't gone away!
Any help would be really appreciated.
Ben

As tony says it's a common problem with the hydrualic valve lifters draining down especially when the vehicle has not been used for a few days, as long as they quiten down after a few miles they are OK. If you are using a 20W50 oil this can take longer to get through and fill up the lifters, try changing to a 15W40 or 15W50 oil.

Hi,
Changing the oil and filter doesn't always make it go away. It is a fairly random thing that can happen almost any time (after starting from cold) but is more likely after a very short previous run. I've had my 1.9 DG since new in !985 and it first did it within the first year of ownership at less than 3000 miles. It must have done it perhaps a hundred or more times since. The good news is that it is still going fine on that original engine.
My advice is not to worry (as long as the rattle eventually stops of course!)
