Auto Boxes How much power will they take ?

Post by dutch »

I would like to convert my T3 into an auto thinking of putting a much bigger diesel in at the same time . Has any one fitted a bigger engine onto the vw auto box & how did it all work :?: Are there good & bad auto boxes ? any advice would be appreciated . Dutch

i ran a peugeot 1.9 td engine through mine . never had a problem

as everything they do break even with a standard motor but i would say no more easier than a manual box.
drop the sump pan off and change the oil! at the same time clean/repace the filter and see if you have any parts in the sump. i got round to playing with a few autos , putting 2.1 diffs on 1.9 boxes ect and some came with parts of brake bands in the sump, although worked perfectly!

i know of pepole running subaru engines through them , also the box is the same as some early audis and porches , only with a different diff/bell housing.

try and get the one from a petrol 2.1 caravelle code NJ it has a 41/11 final drive ratio, check the oil for bits before parting with money, and service it before fitting, procedure is in the bentley and maybe a bit in the haynes manual.
They are basically an old audi three speed autobox bolted onto a differential to suit the bus, they are pretty specialised to work on, I don't have the tools to do the diffs as they are different to the manual boxes differential. Harry at A1 transmissions in Bolton does repair auto boxes and repairs T25 boxes so I guess he'd do a T25 auto box if required.

Thanks Aiden :D , i have the early Bently manual & the information in it bewildering  I will start looking at any available speck on the Audi & fitments , one of my concerns is that the intended lump rpm is 3600 max ish the standard 2.1 engine will rev much higher 5000 ish & witout changing the diff ratio will the auto box change up enough to get max speed or will i be limited to a top speed 55 because it wont rev higher :?:

Thats a bloody big engine to be bolting in the back........ and the torque may shred the box..
Adapter will have to be a "special" one off, so need to find a good friendly engineering co...

I read somewhere (the samba?) that you can use parts form Audi (5000 turbo i think, and maybe 200 (turbo?) too) to beef up the t3 auto tranny.
