Voltage regulator on alternator

Post by cumbriankeith »

I'm trying to help a friend out who has just bought a JX engined camper.
The battery is draining fast when parked and an ammeter in series with the battery shows a drain of around 3.5 amps or so with nothing switched on. I tried the take the fuses out one at a time test but nothing changed. Then I separated the leads going to the pos batt terminal and did the same ammeter test. The big cable to the alternator showed the drain and there is no charging from the alt with engine running (12.4 volts and drops with load). Removing the brush pack/regulator removes the current drain, but the brushes look ok.
So am I right in thinking the regulator is bad?? Can these be replaced separately? Likely source??
Thanks for reading and any help....

I would say so from the tests you have described, sounds like one of the diodes has gone short circuit and hence no charge either. GSF?, but do a search on the technical forum as Kev the Rev posted a thread a few weeks ago and a few sources came up in the replies, think Red Westy knows of a source too.

Contact details for the regulator/bush pack supplier:
Vehicle Electrics (Birmingham Ltd) The aftermarket number for MY alternator (yours may be different) was VERG 1009 but they have a list to cross reference your particular aternator number against so you can order the correct item. Mine was £9.70 incl post.
