Hidden power within my 1Y

Post by SplendiferousII »

About a year ago I fitted a 1Y engine to replace my 1.6na engine. Brilliant made all the difference in the world it would generally pull and extra 10mph everywhere and climb motorway hills without the need to drop it to third.

During the change out I had to modify my throttle cable mounts on top of the fuel pump. All was done nicely and I even got around to painting it before fitting.

But because I was working alone in my workshop I had to make do with blocks of wood to wedge the peddle down, to check the throttle worked when fully open.

Last night I had the van back in the shop with another person present. So I checked the throttle again and there was a little incy ikle little bit more movement left in the throttle arm.

So with a little twisting and bending of the brackets I adjusted this so that I now had full movement..

Not expecting much of an improvement I drove the van up the M5 to find she now pulled like a train. (relatively speaking here)

So I have gone from having lorries overtake me on anything other that the flattest, levelest roads to be able to keep with the lorries on the slight hills and pass them even on the flat to now passing them on the hills and actually having to throttle off when doing so as its all sounding a bit busy in the engine compartment.

The initial conversion was a marked improvement. Adjusting the cable was astonishing !

Yes, the last part of the throttle on diesels can make a big difference... AndyS even modifies the pedal crank-pin, making it longer, to suit the pump arm travel.
Also, if the pump top has been off, the throttle arm/spindle registration can be out can even slip on the splines...

A bit more punchy is more than I found ! The only way I could tell the difference was driving my daily hack route to and from the office. Where it would pull 60 before it would now pull 70 that sort of thing. Feltthe same otherwise.

Sorry I did get your email. but to late as I'd left the office and I wont be there again this week.
