Re: Fridge working or not?
Try ashbridge for the flue.....
As for the welding bit find some one to do it for you a neighbour perhaps its only one tack and would take seconds. I doubt very much the putty stuff would work as it doesn't go all the way round it is just one blob of weld, this is where it needs welding ...
The two pipes are actually different diameters and only touch where the weld is.

now if you look at your pic you can see where the weld was, probably failed due to someone pulling the fridge out without disconnecting the flue.

Yes- very yes! When we were first married things were a bit different from now. When stuff went wrong you had to save up for a new one not like now when even skint people use their plastic to the limit. Anyway our domestic fridge needed a ride rond the block in our van about every three months to get it going again. Yes it can work but not if the fridge needs re-gassing .

How does one do a continuity test? What would I be looking for on the multimeter? Thanks.

Rob,
Right, I'll try to organise a weld - I'll take it to my garage bloke... they have had enough money off me for my VW repairs over the years...

Re: Fridge working or not?
Set the multimeter to the resistance range (ohms or 'Ω'). Touch the two probes together and the needle (if its a needle one) will move to the far right hand side (short circuit). Take them apart and the needle will move back to the left hand side (open circuit).Helga wrote:How does one do a continuity test? What would I be looking for on the multimeter? Thanks.
Disconnect at least one side of the wiring to the element and put the probes across the element. If the needle fails to move and stays at the left hand side the element is open circuit and knackered, if the needle moves over to the right hand side the element is intact.
After all that you're going to tell me the multimeter's digital aren't you?

Will try in a moment...
Re: Fridge working or not?
Thanks LHD, for all your help - there is just one more question about the positioning of the 'cap' on the burner pipe - Does it supposed to sit 'on top' as in diagram A? Half way down like B, or pushed right on like C?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Fridge working or not?
lol - my multimeter is now not working either... so will return for more help when I've purchased a new one...

Oh.
Er........you didn't try and do the continuity test with the fridge still connected to the mains did you?

Re: Fridge working or not?
Like diagram A.
Look at your pic with the two pieces of exhaust, on the broken off bit you can see a tear. This is where the weld used to be. Now if you look at the actual exhaust you can see the blob of weld this is where they join together and it will look something like in the diagram below.

As soon as you put the two pieces together the tear and the weld will fit together like a jigsaw, and it will all fall into place.

Re: Fridge working or not?
Perfect, thanks LHD. Oh, borrowed a multimeter - and the element is dead, so one is now winging my way! Yippee!
Re: Fridge working or not?
Brilliant - new element in, neighbour welded the metal pipe... and now all is working! Thanks everybody for your help!

Re: Fridge working or not?
Hi, I just wanted to thank everybody who answered my post and gave me help! The fridge is now welded and there is a new flue pipe, and new elements and cleaned up and stood upside down for a couple of days and now back in screwed in and wired up and she is working a treat!
Thanks so much, don't know what I'd do without 80 90 and you guys!
